Marriage License Process

In order to obtain a marriage license, applicants must:

  • supply proof of identification, driver's license or birth certificate,

  • supply social security card,

  • pay a license fee of $100.00, cash only.
  • Applicants can deduct $60.00 of the fee IF:
    Both applicants are residents and they have completed a Four-hour Premarital Preparation Course.- Then the fee would be $40.00, cash only.
    (The Premarital Preparation Course needs to be
    completed and notorized before the marriage license can be issued.)

  • be married within 30 days after taking out a license.

  • Applicants between 16 and 17 years of age must have signature of parent or guardian + 3 day waiting period.

  • Applicants under 16 years of age must be approved by judge.

  • License signed by person solemnizing vows should be returned in person or by mail within three days of the ceremony.


Applicants do not need to be residents of Washington County, nor of Tennessee. Blood tests are no longer required in Tennessee. The marriage ceremony can occur anywhere in the United States.
